Congress corporator from ward no 17 Rajeev Mehra has launched an indefinite hunger strike against the lethargic attitude of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) officers at Sheetal Nagar in Mira Road.
MBMC administration has been carrying out gutter widening work between Sheetal Nagar and Shanti Nagar. However, Rajeev Mehra alleged that the work in progress is being done in the wrong way. He said, “Because the gutters are higher than the road, the rainwater will not be drained properly. As a result, water will log in the shops of local traders and ground floor residents. Therefore, I have demanded the administration to pay attention to this work and do it properly.”
Every year, a large amount of water flooded inside the lower floored flat of Sheetal Nagar and Shanti Nagar area during the monsoon. They had suffered a lot for many years. Also, due to the escalated height of the road, the shops and houses of the residents became low lying areas. “Apart from that, the engineering of the current work of gutter is a disaster. The road is beneath the gutter based. As a result, the Sheetal Nagar area flooded during the rainy season. Therefore, the MBMC should do the work as per the development plan,” said Congress corporator Rajeev Mehra.
Started in September, last year, the construction work is still incomplete, inviting the wrath of residents. “We have put several complaints in this regard. However, they don’t want to listen because of ‘someone’s’ political pressure. Huge corruption and unwanted work are going on. That’s why I’m on the hunger strike,” said Mehra.
Other participants
Corporators including Merlyn D’sa, Rubina Firoz, Anil Sawant from Rajeev Mehra’s panel also participated. Along with them, other Congress Corporators also came to boost the morale of the Mehra. Mira Bhayandar District Congress President Pramod Samant, Youth President-Deep Kakade amongst other leaders participated in the agitation.
On Friday, Muzaffar Hussain, Working President, MPCC also paid the gratitude and visited the agitation spot. “BJP is in power at MBMC. They held hostage to the residents of Sheetal Nagar and Shanti Nagar. Every year, the same story. We report the situation to the MBMC administration, every year. However, they ignored the condition here, said Hussain, former Member of Legislative Council and Deputy Mayor.
MBMC Delegation visited
On Friday, a delegation from MBMC including Additional Commissioner Dhole and Officer Shivaji Barkund had visited the protesting site and registered the grievance of Rajeev Mehra.
