Rape accused tried to set ablaze complainant after she refused to withdraw case in Kashimira

A Naya Nagar resident was arrested from Ahmedabad for allegedly pouring inflammable substance on a 26-year-old Kashimira woman, with an intention to set her on fire after she refused to withdraw a rape case against him. The incident took place on Friday at around 10.30 pm in Kashimira.

After the incident, police has registered a case in this regard on Saturday and initiated the investigation. On Monday, the accused has been arrested from Ahmedabad. He has been remanded to police custody by the Thane court.

While the victim was on her way home, the accused Ishrat Ali alias Sonu chased her on the bike. He came near to her and asked her to withdraw the rape case filed against him on January 19, last month. Accused handed her a stamp paper in which her no- objection to the withdrawal of the case was typed. He asked her to sign the papers, which she refused. When she refused, he threw inflammable liquid on her. She started shouting loudly. After seeing the public, Ali abused her and fled the spot with his friend.

Ironically, the victim is the mother of two children. The woman walked a few meters then two guys took her to Kashimira Police Station. She developed the irritation as the liquid reached in her eyes. Due to this, police refer her for medical at Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayander, where she was treated.

The inflammable substance could be either petrol or diesel, said the police. Police took the incident seriously and started an investigation.

Accused nabbed

Upon hearing that the Sonu was originally from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, a team was sent in that direction and arrested him on Monday. The accused was produced in Thane Sessions Court on Tuesday.

Police Sub-Inspector Amit Patil of the Kashimira Police Station is further investigating the case. Police said, “The accused may have tried to set the woman on fire. However, he fled the spot after seeing the crowd.”
