The BJP corporator and former Standing Committee Chairman has demanded action against errant private hospitals which had not only overcharged hapless patients for Covid-19 but also showing doldrums in refunding the amount. The reimbursement order has been issued by the audit teams of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) after reviewing the bills.
Bhartiya Janata Party corporator and former Standing Committee Chairman Adv. Ravi Vyas, in his submitted letter, has asked the MBMC administration to cancel the licenses and filing criminal cases against these types of sickbays. Currently, more than 15 private hospitals have MoU with the civic body under the 80:20 pattern. The State Government GR for Coronavirus infection treatment came on May 21.
However, after receiving many complaints about overcharged billing by the private hospitals, the MBMC has constituted three audit teams comprising senior officials. The team has given tasks of personally visiting the private hospitals for audit and verification of medical bills.
“Nevertheless, the audit teams never visited the hospitals personally. They ask the patient relatives to come to the headquarters with the bills,” alleges the NGO. Later, the teams abruptly stopped working.
“It is binding upon the teams to submit and release audit reports. However, it has come to light that the team has not declared the audit reports. Neither they have taken any action against these errant private hospitals. Despite the hospitals have failed to reimburse the difference amount to patients for more than 3 months,” alleged Vyas.
“The audit teams have been performing their duties. But if any hospital is defying reimbursement orders, we will verify and take action. It will take time for me to compile audit reports of the teams.” said deputy civic chief Sambhaji Waghmare.
In a letter written to the Commissioner MBMC Dr Vijay Rathod, a victim Ramswaroop Gupta said, “I admitted my wife on 07th May for the COVID-19 treatment in Family Care Hospital. However, at the time of discharge, I received a whopping bill of Rs 3,82,536. I paid the whole amount, however, compliant with the audit team.”
“Audit team has reviewed the bills and asked the hospital to return the amount. However, it’s being more than four months, the hospital has not refunded my ‘extra charged’ amount,” said Mr Gupta.
Significantly, Family Care Hospital runs in the building owned by former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta. There had been several complaints of the overcharging by this private hospital during COVID-19 era. Even, the hospital had charged Rs 22,500 for the PPE kits. In another complaint, they captive the COVID-19 dead body for more than eight hours due to non-payment of bills.
