A 20-year-old married woman raped in a Golden Nest COVID-19 Quarantine Centre by a security guard cum attendant at Mira Road. Navghar Police arrested the accused on Saturday night. The incident took place in June but came to light on Saturday when the 20-year-old woman lodged a police complaint.
The MMRDA building at the Golden Nest area has been converted into an Isolation Centre by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation. The facility is for placing suspected coronavirus patients. On May 24, the victim and her 11-year-old niece along with 10-month-old daughter were isolated there.
The accused Vikram Babusingh Shere(27) entered the room under the pretext of giving hot water and milk. “After seeing that the niece and daughter went to sleeping, he locked the room from inside and raped me. He also repeatedly threatened to kill my daughter. He repeatedly raped thrice between June 2 to June 5,” said the victim.
The woman did not tell anyone about the incident for fear of the girl’s life. After the woman went home, she told her family members about it. “My husband divorced me and taken away my daughter with him. My life becomes hell after quarantine centre,” said the victim.
Upon learning of this, the woman’s family informed local social worker Ramzan Khatri about the incident. However, Ramzan Khatri discussed the woman’s ordeal with Mayor Jyotsana Hasnale and Commissioner Dr Vijay Rathod. Then, Khatri along with victim approached Navghar Police. After registering the case, Navghar police arrested the concerned security guard. Shere was an employee of the Sainik Security, which has contracted for guarding the MBMC building. Despite having lots of complaint about the Sainik’s bouncers and their dadagiri, MBMC has not taken any action against them.
“The woman did not approach police at that time as she was afraid the accused would harm her family members. She lodged a police complaint on Saturday following which the accused was arrested and a case was registered against him under Indian Penal Code Section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions,” said Sampatrao Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Navghar Police Station.
According to information received, Shere is a resident of Moti Nagar in Bhayandar(West) and married. Significantly, he has two daughters.
Ramzan Khatri, the social activist said, “After her mother said the incident, we met Mayor and commissioner. On their instruction, we complain at Navghar police station. I will fight till the justice served to her and everybody should fight for justice.”
“If this thing is happening in the COVID-19 quarantine centre then this is horrible. This incident is a blot on society. MBMC should increase the Security of the quarantine centre. I appealed administration that if you can’t give the security then home quarantine woman,” said Khatri.
