Navghar Police have arrested four persons for allegedly killing a 24-year-old man on suspicion of being a thief at Bhayandar. The incident happened in the wee hours of Saturday. The incident was reported from an open ground near Indira Nagar in Bhayandar (east) at around 2:30 am.
“The Navghar police were alerted about an unidentified body. The body having multiple injuries, lying on the MBMC ground near Shankar Narayan College. The police rushed to the spot and after panchnama sent the body for the post mortem,” said Amit Kale, DCP Zone -1 of Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar Commissionerate.
Later, the deceased was identified as Surajban Soni (24) from Mumbai. He was roaming in the area when the group comprising local youngsters mistook him for a thief and mounted a violent assault on him and dumped him in the ground before fleeing the spot. However, he died due to severe assault on him.
Nevertheless, the police registered a case under Indian Penal Code Section 302 (murder) and started the investigation immediately, DCP said.
The mob also thrashed another youth on suspicion of being a thief and handed him over to the police. However, he managed to get away with serious injuries to his ears.
However, four persons have been arrested in this connection on Sunday.
The police were trying to find out why the victim had gone to the area, he said.
Police have arrested four persons within three hours of the incident. The accused said that the deceased was roaming in the slum area under suspicious circumstances. They mistook him as a thief. The accused have confessed to their crime.
