The police personnel from Navghar have busted a hookah den running from a residential flat in Samruddhi Complex, at the Indralok area of Bhayandar (east) on Friday. According to the sources, residents who were frustrated with the action informed the police about the activities running from their housing society.
The illegal activity was running from the flat on the fifth floor of the Samruddhi Complex. The residential informed the police about outsiders frequenting a flat apparently during the IPL matches to enjoy Smokey tobacco.
After getting the complaint, Sampatrao Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Navghar immediately swung into action and raided the flat with the team. Police arrested three people identified as Nikhil Kodia (27), Ravi Kumar Batham (28) and Pawan Kumar Chandel (22). They also seized hookah pots and flavoured tobacco from the premises of the hookah den which busted on Friday.
However, a video clip went viral on social media platforms about the raid. 12 people were seen in the clip including sons of local builders and politicians. Significantly, police arrested only three scapegoats.
“However, the video is being screened to identify the other suspects. The process is underway to take appropriate action against the flat owner who allowed the illegal activities,” clarified, Sampatrao Patil.
However, 7 to 8 other accused are absconding. Patil informed that their search is on.
Meanwhile, a case under the provisions of the Epidemic Act, Disaster Management Act and relevant sections of the IIPC and Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA), 2003 has been registered against the accused. Further investigations were on.
