Protested by locals and politicians

Hundreds of residents and politicians of various political parties protested on Thursday at Mira-Bhayandar, after posters announcing that an independent MLA, Geeta Jain, was giving ‘her’ 22-storey building, to be used as a quarantine centre for COVID-19 patients were put up.

The building is situated in a crowded area near New Golden Nest in Mira Road. Residents opposed the centre, saying it will make them vulnerable to Coronavirus. They approached the MLA’s office but claimed they were not allowed to meet her. Local politicians and workers from various parties then began to protest with the residents.

How Panic created

Residents of Shrushti complex in Mira Road had protested against the Quarantine Cell at Delta Gardens area, which forced the Municipal Corporation administration to select another vacant building in New Golden Nest, Bhayander (east).

As rumours of suspect cases being coming to the residential building in Bhayandar spread, locals gathered outside the Sports Complex and started the protest. Even videos were circulated on Social Media like Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp boosted the panic.

Protestors alleged that the corporation changed its decision because the Mira Road Quarantine Cell was located in a posh area and selected the Bhayander area. Police were called in to control the crowd.

Civic officials also reached the spot to assure locals that the building was set aside in case of an emergency.

HIFI Facilities for Quarantines

According to sources, the lowest floors of the 22-storeyed building have been taken over by the MBMC to ensure that there are plenty of places to quarantine individuals.

The facilities will provide tea and refreshments, lunch and dining facilities, medical kits, mineral water bottles, newspapers and WiFi connection. As of now, 31 rooms are ready, and the number is likely to go up.

While paramedical staff including a doctor and three nurses will work 24×7 in three shifts, sufficient housekeeping personnel will be available to maintain proper hygiene at the centre for Corona Virus Quarantine. Four security guards will be provided for the building,” said MBMC Commissioner Chandrakant Dange.
